The application of three complementary technologies is at the heart of the Datatrak system. Our Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) solution relies on our expertise in positioning technology, communications systems and software display systems. Ongoing research and development ensures Datatrak continues to satisfy customers' changing requirements and expectations. This commitment will enable you to provide your own customers with continuing standards of service excellence.

Positioning technology

Our positioning system uses a unique network of land-based low frequency transmitters throughout the UK. Datatrak was originally developed for the security industry to provide a reliable and repeatable service without the risks associated with the Global Positioning System (GPS). GPS uses satellites that span the globe. With its own dedicated network, Siemens VDO is unique in its ability to offer a resilient AVL solution. You can choose from: low frequency only, low frequency with GPS augmentation or GPS only. A vehicle locator unit can receive both signals and work out an accurate position.
 

Communication technology

The Datatrak Digital Network (DDN) provides highly reliable yet affordable continuous real-time communications. Levels of reliability and access to the network are high. Each vehicle is given a unique 'time slot' to transmit a short burst of data. This AVL update is transmitted at regular pre-defined intervals, usually two minutes, and is received by all adjacent base stations. Information is passed to the customer via a dedicated lease line or via the Internet.

For some applications, our Multi-Comms systems use either the DDN or a Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) network to provide a seamless solution, depending on geographic location and circumstances.
 

Customer display software

Our customer application software converts all data received from the vehicle location and displays it in a readable, easy-to-use format. Maps zooming down to street level monitor every vehicle's position and status in real-time. At a click, you can check all historical vehicle movements – drop-offs, pick-up times or en-route travelling. You can choose from a variety of applications: from tracking your vehicles via the Internet to opting for a dedicated lease line. These can be tailored to your business and information requirements.
